Michelin star restaurants on the Costa Brava

The Costa Brava, as well as the inland Empordà region and Girona province as a whole, boasts a wealth of renowned restaurants that are now regarded as world leaders in haute cuisine and gastro-tourism. Between them they have amassed a significant collection of prizes and accolades including Michelin Stars, which is arguably the award held in highest acclaim by lovers of fine dining.

Here we provide a list of the Michelin star restaurants located around the Costa Brava, all of them within half an hour from the coast, with its beaches and coves, and also just a few minutes from some of the “Costa Brava Hotels de Luxe” – a network of the best luxury hotels in the area. Finding the best place for an unforgettable meal has never been so easy, and below we travel from north to south to present you with six Costa Brava restaurants, along with a couple of additional surprises:

Miramar (Llançà) – 2 Michelin Stars

This is undoubtedly word-renowned chef Paco Pérez’s most emblematic restaurant. Located in Llançà, in the heart of the Cap de Creus Natural Park which is land of the Tramontana (north-westerly) wind, Miramar offers bona fide Mediterranean cuisine with outstanding à la carte dishes and set menus that revolve largely around seafood.

The authentic flavour of his dishes is further enhanced by their stunning presentation and a friendly, attentive service, as well as an unrivalled view over the bay of Llançà. Irresistible!

Castell Peralada Restaurant (Peralada) – 1 Michelin Star

Castell Peralada Restaurant offers a modern take on Empordà cuisine. The experience of savouring the exquisite creations of Javi Martínez, who has taken over from previous head chef Xavi Sagristà, is further enhanced by Toni Gerez’s excellent front-of house-service. As the restaurant’s sommelier, make sure to take his wine suggestions on board, but most importantly don’t miss out on his cheese trolley. Unforgettable!

We recommend rounding off your restaurant visit with a stay at Hotel Peralada, a benchmark for luxury, well-being, wine tourism and golf in the Empordà.

Emporium (Castelló d’Empúries) – 1 Michelin Star

This restaurant forms part of the hotel of the same name – which was inspired on the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries. Since 1965 it has been in the hands of the Jordà family, and the restaurant is currently run by twin brothers Màrius and Joan, with the expert backing of their father Salvador. Between them they take turns at running the kitchen and front-of-house, which is possibly the reason for which all guests fall in love – and in equal measure – with both the cooking and service alike.

Emporium’ s cuisine is based around the traditional gastronomy and seasonal produce of the Alt Empordà region, especially its “surf and turf” dishes – thus making it a paragon of the local territory.

Bo.TiC (Corçà) – 2 Michelin Stars

Bo.TiC offers creative, signature, innovative and sustainable cuisine inspired by traditional cooking but that constantly aims to make strides to develop. It offers an accomplished service and extensive wine list. Located in the very heart of the Alt Empordà, it is a modern and comfortable establishment which will allow you to explore new sensations.

Bo.TiC was founded by Albert Sastregener and Cristina Torrent – a couple both in their personal and professional lives whose creative ideas are fuelled by sentiment and passion.

Tinars (Llagostera) – 1 Michelin Star

Tinars offers the perfect balance between tradition and modernity, with a high-quality menu in which both its traditional and more innovative dishes are based on both locally-sourced and seasonal produce alike. It offers an extensive range of both local and international wines, and it is located in an elegant traditional Catalan country house complete with its garden and terrace.

Owned by the Gascons, Tinars’ history is also very much a family one. In a place where the past, present and future come together, it is currently run by siblings Marc and Elena, who run the kitchen and front-of-house, respectively.

La Cuina de Can Simón (Tossa de Mar) – 1 Michelin Star

In this cosy restaurant located in a house dating back to 1700, siblings Josep Maria and Xavier Lores-Gelpí – who run the front-of-house and kitchen respectively – pay homage to their ancestors as well as the fishermen and villagers of Tossa.

Although La Cuina de Can Simón is strongly built around traditional flavours, it also aims for these to evolve and to take them to the next level. You should also pay close attention to how the dishes are presented – you’ll be surprised!

‘Bonus track’: two more world-renowned establishments not to be missed

Although a little further afield than the Costa Brava per se, we feel that a true gastro-tourist should not miss out on either of the following establishments.

Firstly there is El Celler de Can Roca (Girona, 3 Michelin Stars), the world-famous restaurant of brothers Josep, Joan and Jordi Roca, which has twice been named the best restaurant in the world (2013 and 2015).

Another must-visit is the restaurant Disfrutar (Barcelona, 2 Michelin Stars), which has recently made it to number two on the list of the world’s best restaurants, thanks to the trio of chefs Mateu Casañas, Oriol Castro and Eduard Xatruch.

For both these establishments, we recommend booking with plenty of time as there is a waiting list of several months!
