The best wines to celebrate summer
It is summer and there is nothing better to celebrate it than a glass of the best wine chosen for the occasion.
Intense and complex flavours, or smooth and refreshing, white, rosé or red wines to accompany a special meal or to enjoy on their own at dusk or in the evening.
The sommeliers and maître d’s of some of the most outstanding deluxe hotels and restaurants on the Costa Brava propose a selection of essential wines for this summer. Choose yours.
Winery: Massís de l’Albera
DO: Empordà
Varieties: 100% red grenache
This is a wine that, despite being made from red grenache, is produced as a white wine. It is suggested to us by Miquel Gotanegra, owner and manager of the Hotel Spa Terraza and restaurant La Cuina d’En Norat in Roses. It is a flavourful wine, which stands out for its interesting, slightly dry and persistent end, ideal for accompanying all kinds of Mediterranean cuisine dishes. Or for drinking alone, of course. A luxury produced a few kilometres from the Costa Brava.
Winery: Perelada
DO: Empordà
Varieties: 100% red grenache
Aging: 14 months in French oak barrels
Toni Gerez, sommelier at the Castell Peralada Restaurant, with 1 Michelin star, confesses to being “ in love with this wine, which is fresh and silky. He highlights the aromas of red berries combined with balsamic hints and sensations of freshness from the aromatic herbs. A wine that transports us to the Costa Brava landscape: pine trees, rosemary, thyme and others. A wine of landscapes and territory”. For a truly luxurious experience, he suggests serving it cool, between 10 and 12 ºC.
Winery: Martí Fabra
DO: Empordà
Varieties: 100% Carignan
Aging: 9 months in concrete tanks and then 1 year in French oak barrels from La Costa Beach & Golf Resort in Pals, one of the hotels of the Costa Brava Hotels de Luxe, the maître d’ of the restaurant Aquamare, Joan Oller, recommends this bright Picota cherry-coloured red wine. He explains that on the nose it is complex, with aromas of ripe fruit and balsamic touches. On the palate, it is powerful and balanced between the fruit and the tannins. “It is a highly recommended wine for tasting and enjoying”, states Oller.
LAS FINCAS ROSADO BARREL FERMENTED 2019
Winery: Chivite
DO: Navarre
Varieties: 100% red grenache
Aging: 10 months in French oak barrels
Lluís Tremoleda, Restaurant Manager of the Hotel Santa Marta, an outstanding luxury hotel on the Costa Brava where we find Restaurant 58, recommends this exclusive pale rosé, of which only 2,130 bottles are produced. Its nose is complex, with a significant range of nuances; and on the palate it is velvety and fresh at the same time, with a long finish. Tremoleda explains that it is “a versatile wine that goes very well with all summer food and leaves the most demanding palates satisfied.”
Winery: François Lurton
DO: IGP Côtes de Gascogne
Varieties: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
We finish this route with a luxury trip to the south-west of France. Josep Font, owner and maître d’ of the Sa Punta Hotel Restaurant, a classic in the heart of the Costa Brava, highlights this onion-coloured rosé. Obviously, it can be drunk alone, but Font suggests “combining it with two ice cubes and, if you want it as an aperitif, add 10 drops of pink grapefruit and a splash of soda water”. No doubt, a bold and glamorous combination.
